Initial Reserch: Philippe Starck

In my project I will start by looking at Philippe Starck work. Starck has been a famous French designer for over fifty years and has crafted over 10,000 innovative designs across various categories, including furniture, lamps, boats, and motorbikes. His projects often take to be transparent between art and functionality. Between Starck’s highly famous works are the Les Bains Douches Nightclub, Delano Hotel in Miami, Juicy Salif Lemon Squeezer, Royal Monceau Hotel, Ghost Chair for Kartell, Royalton Hotel in New York, and Café Costes in Paris. (Giuroiu, 2024)

From the start, his designs were never intended for an exclusive few but for society as a whole. Philippe believes that modern style emerges from the natural evolution of an object, in contrast to the ideology of limited editions, where rarity is driven by wealth rather than genuine need. (Philippe Starck: About, 2025)

From all his work, I want to focus on interior design. I chose the Vase Chair as an outstanding piece that connects two apparently different ideas. Design by Philippe Starck and Eugeni Quillet for Serralunga is more than vase, it also a chair or a unique element that fits into elegant interior and exterior spaces.‎ The opening on its surface adds a sense of lightness and fluidity, transforming it into an artistic object (archiproducts.com, 2025)

Furthermore, the desk with storage space, shape that can fit into corner or free standing, also curved front creating feeling of connection. BaObab, with its smoothly curved design, created as a single piece, offers protection and a reassuring sense of security. Its absence of right angles allows for flexible positioning in any setting. It is particularly well-suited for businesses, retail spaces, and home offices, as well as for established organisations looking to create a modern image. Philippe Starck drew inspiration from the shape of the baobab tree seed (Fairs, 2021).

Finally, the stools resemble an art installation rather than furniture, and I would love the opportunity to use them! Created for German director Wim Wenders, who requested a stool for standing work, the design integrates both art and functionality. The stool's legs mimic plant roots, emphasising Starck's philosophy of industrial design, which prioritises simplicity with a distinctive artistic touch. Its clean lines and contemporary aesthetic demonstrate a balance between practicality and creative talent (Andrus, 2024).
